Description This unit covers the skills and knowledge to press work as part of the garment production process.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application The unit applies to pressing of work as part of the garment production process where the position and handling of work are under the control of the operator and operator skills may contribute to the final appearance and finish of the work.Work to be pressed may include stable woven and knitted natural and synthetic fabrics.Work is conducted according to defined procedures.Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities.The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employmentstandard operating procedureswork instructionsoral, written and visual communicationquality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section outputhousekeepingtasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control, and recyclingThis unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising to press work. Element: Prepare workstation
  • Work area is set up according to OHSpractices.
  • Pressing equipment is cleaned and checked.
  • Routine minor maintenance is performed.
  • Work is laid out in correct proximity and sequence.

  • Work is collected or received and quality checked, and any follow-up action determined.
  • Faults, spots and marks are identified and appropriate action taken.
  • Appropriate attachments are selected and used.
  • Pressing is sequenced.
  • Work is positioned on pressing equipment according to product requirements.
  • Heat, steam, vacuum, pressure and time are applied according to product requirements and fabric specifications.
  • Work is pressed.
  • Equipment and work handling are controlled for variations in work type and construction and pressing requirements.
  • OHS practices are followed.
  • Action is taken according to workplace practices to prevent accidents and to eliminate risks to personal safety.

  • Pressed work is inspected and compared against workplace pressing standards.
  • Results of inspection of work are recorded.
  • Subsequent action to either reject or correct faulty work is reported andrecorded.
  • Preventative action taken to avoid any recurrence of faulty work is recorded.
  • Pressed work is either passed to next operation, hung or packed and directed to required despatch area, despatch storage or packing sections.
